The first book by Tochi Onyebuchi, chronicles the struggles of being black in America revolving around police brutality, racism, and injustice. Set in the midst of the 1992 L.A. riots,  The story centers around Ella and her brother, Khev. Throughout their lives they experienced the negative effects that their skin tone has brought upon them, like systematic racism and brutality. When Khev is arrested and put in jail for a crime Ella wants to use her magical powers to get him out. Both Ella and Khev had a past that was plagued by racism but they work toward a future that can change the world.

This dystopian narrative aims at the fight toward a revolution, and highlights the anger and fury felt with injustices in the black community.
