If you’re looking for a great summer read, this is definitely something to look out for. Junot Diaz made a name for himself as a writer when he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and short stories like Drown. In this new book, which is a collection of short stories, we follow the lives of a recurring character, Yunior, as he deals with love, sex, infidelity and loss, and see what it is really like to come to America with hopes and dreams of better life. Diaz’s writing is spectacular in its detail, imagery and style. He brings you into the lives of each character, making you care for them and see them as someone you know. His prose is captivating, addicting and at times erotic. His use of Spanglish throughout the stories really puts you in the shoes of each character, making you wonder what it must be like to come to a new country not knowing how to speak. Diaz digs deep into the feelings of immigrant Hispanics, giving his readers a taste of what it is like firsthand.
